The decision was made by health officials in Iceland yesterday to add Spain, France and Germany to the list of areas with a high risk of contracting COVID-19, mbl.is reports.

This means that Icelanders arriving from Spain (including the Canary Islands) and France must stay in quarantine for 14 days after their arrival, as of March 14. Icelanders arriving from Germany must stay in quarantine 14 days after their arrival, as of March 12.

The reason these three countries are being added to the list of high risk areas is the rapid spread of the virus in all of them in recent days. In addition to the countries just added, the high risk areas include China, Italy, South Korea, Iran, and ski resorts in the Alps. For a detailed list, see here.

Icelanders have been advised not to travel abroad, and those who are currently abroad have been advised to return earlier than planned. Their right and access to healthcare abroad cannot be taken for granted during the pandemic. In addition, an increasing number of countries have resorted to closing their borders or quarantining travelers.

Icelanders who live abroad are encouraged to obtain information about their right to healthcare.
