The sales of canned goods, breakfast cereal, crackers and other groceries with a long shelf life have increased five-fold at Bónus grocery stores since the first case of COVID-19, the novel coronavirus, was confirmed in Iceland on Friday, mbl.is reports, quoting RÚV.

Since the beginning of the year, Bónus stores have sold about 30,000 disinfectant dispensers.

The Nettó grocery chain has seen an increase in online purchases of about 60 percent. Some customers have asked for their groceries to be left on their doorsteps, which comes as no surprise, since close to 300 Icelanders are in quarantine at home, on the advice of authorities.

At Nettó stores, as many disinfectant dispensers have sold during the past two months as there had during the previous two years.

So far, nine cases of the virus have been confirmed in Iceland.
