The tower of Hallgrímskirkja Church in Reykjavík will be closed for the coming month, while a new elevator is being installed. Between 700 and 1,000 people visit the tower daily at this time of year, and many more in summer.

Tourists intending to enjoy the view yesterday were disappointed not to be able to access the tower.

Plans are to reopen the tower on May 28 and, according to Sigríður Hjálmarsdóttir, the church’s manging director, it looks like the installation will be on schedule.

“Work on the project goes on day and night, because we want it to take as short a time as possible, both for the tourists’ sake and ours,” she tells mbl.is. “It benefits all of us to have this go well.”

The new elevator will have a higher ceiling than the old one and move faster. The old one traveled at 1m/sec, while the new one will take you to the top at 1.6m/sec.
