The people involved in the terrible accident at Núpsvötn this morning were British tourists reports mbl.is. A witness says that the scene of the accident was horrifying.

Three people died in the accident and one, reports RÚV was a child.

Guide Adolf Ingi Erlingsson arrived at the scene of the accident that claimed the lives of four people this morning at Núpsvötn. Asked what the scene of the accident had ben like he says it was horrifying. "The car was totally smashed up after flying off the bridge and plunging down there. When I arrived four had been retrieved from the vehicle, one was dead and three still stuck in the car, two of them probably dead. It was just awful."

Erlingsson says that he can't fathom what happened but that he was surprised as he had not noticed any ice on the bridge. He was transporting 19 tourists around South Iceland in his own vehicle. "They didn't see any of it thankfully, one doesn't see much from the bridge and I stopped the car when I had crossed the bridge and went to see if I could help. They remained in the car but know what happened so some of them were a bit shocked."

He believes that the vehicle fell some six meters onto the river bed.
