Principal proceedings against Thomas Møller Olsen begin today at the Icelandic national court. Møller Olsen was sentenced to nineteen years imprisonment for the murder of Birna Brjánsdóttir in January  last year but appealed the case at the Icelandic national court.

The judge has banned media and photographers at the proceedings.

The murder case of Birna Brjánsdóttir shook the Icelandic nation in January 2017. Birna was a twenty-year-old who went missing after walking back from a nightclub in one of Reykjavik's main shopping streets. An extensive search for her took place and her body was found washed up on a beach one week later.

Möller Olsen was found guilty at the Reykjavik district court and the trial received considerable media attention, which sparked some criticism as witnesses received knowledge of what other witnesses were saying through the media.
