Many Icelanders were terrified by the book Ég man þig (English: I remember You: A Ghost Story) which was released a few years ago. Now they are lining up in cinemas to get scared again, by the movie.
Much of the story takes place in Hesteyri, a deserted village in a very remote part of Iceland’s West Fjords. A group of friends decide to buy and renovate an old house there, to offer accommodation to tourists hiking in the area in summer. They quickly realize they are not the only ones there even though it's winter, the village deserted, and no hikers around.
The movie is directed by Óskar Þór Axelsson, who also directed Svartur á leik. A crime fiction which was very popular in Iceland in 2012.
The book is by Yrsa Sigurðardóttir, who is most famous for her Nordic Noir’s and has been a bestselling author in Iceland for many years. Many of her books have been translated to other languages.
Sold all over the world after Cannes Film Festival
The movie has gotten great reviews in Iceland and was very successful at Cannes Film Festival. The movie was sold all over the world, to North America, France, Japan, Latin America and Vietnam. Previously it had been sold to Studiocanal in the UK, Telemunchen for German speaking countries, Euromedia in Turkey and Vertigo in Hungary.
