UK’s recent hummus crisis fault of an Icelandic company
There was a recent hummus crisis in the UK. Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Mark & Spencer faced a shortage of this favorite of Middle Eastern dishes.
The shortage came after a series of complaints that the dip had an unpleasant flavour, which one Twitter user described as metallic, according to The Guardian.
The Guardian later reported that it was the fault of Icelandic company Bakkavör, UK’s leading provider of fresh prepared foods.
Bakkavör has often been mentioned in Icelandic media over the recent years. The brothers that founded the company were prosecuted after the 2008 financial collapse.
The problem was described as a taste issue, the product was cleared from the shelves. Bakkavör stressed there was no food safety issue.
Of all the countries in Europe, a hummus crisis would hit the UK the hardest, as they seem to love it the most. With 41% of Brits having pots in the fridge. Almost twice as many as in any other country according to a survey from 2013.
