A man was found half conscious and disorientated in Raufarhóllshellir cave in South Iceland today by SAR teams.

The man had fallen and been knocked unconscious. A woman, another tourist, found the man by chance some 100 metres inside the cave and called emergency services.

It took rescue teams around half an hour to get the man out of the cave and into an ambulance which transported him to the National University Hospital in Reykjavik where he is recovering.

The Landsbjörg association of search and rescue teams would like to use this opportunity to stress that people should never go caving alone. They say that it's of utmost importance to use safety equipment and to let other people know where you are going.
