The diver who was the victim of a serious accident at Silfra site at Þingvellir is on a ventilator and in critical condition at Iceland’s National University Hospital in Reykjavik.

The woman in question (and not a man as previously reported) is a tourist in her twenties visiting Iceland from abroad.

Eight tour companies have licences from the Icelandic Transport Authority to operate diving services at Silfra. The Authority routinely checks their gear and certifies that they meet all equipment and safety requirements.

There have been two fatal accidents at Silfra in the past – one involving another tourist in 2010, and the second a local in 2012.
