Atli Helgason, sentenced to prison fifteen years ago for the murder of Einar Örn Birgisson in a much publicised murder case, has had his criminal record cleared and is seeking to regain his rights as a practicing barrister.

Helgason, who was disbarred, has now applied to the Reykjavik District Court to reobtain his rights. The court is looking into the matter this week. He finished serving his sentence in 2010 and has been working at a law firm since.

For someone to be able to get their criminal record cleared they have to have finished serving their sentence and five years need to have passed since then.  This only applies if the offence was a first offence.

Helgason got his criminal record cleared at the end of 2015.

Birgir Örn Birgisson, the father of the victim whom Helgason murdered in November 2000, said to Fréttablaðið today that this news had come as a shock. "He's never shown any repentance. We've never heard from him."
