Women offered rent in exchange for sex
According to staff at Kvennaathvarfið, the safe shelter for women and children who have suffered domestic violence, there are many examples of women looking for accommodation being offered flats in exchange for sex.
Managing director of the shelter, Sigþrúður Guðmundsdóttir said to Morgunblaðið that she believes these cases to be far more frequent than those reported to police and that it's sad that people take advantage of people in need.
"But humans are unpredictable. Every year we are told of cases where part of the rent has to be paid in sexual favours. I think it's a reality that's much more common than people think."
In 2015, 126 women with 74 children sought help from Kvennaathvarfið, which is an increase from precedent years.
