Iceland’s iconic Blue Lagoon has been emptied for renovation and extension work set to last two weeks.

In the first closure of the site since 1999, the characteristic blue hue of the warm water has been replaced by the jet black of the underlying lava – as can be seen in the aerial picture above.

The larger, improved facilities will open on 22 January and are said to include a larger lagoon, a new ‘Skin Care’ bar, a new refreshment area and improved guest facilities.

The photograph was taken yesterday by Gísli Gíslason, a helicopter pilot with Norðurflug Helicopter Tours.
