Icy road conditions are the likely cause of a ten-car pile-up in Reykjavik this lunchtime.

Four people have been taken to A&E, although their injuries are not believed to be serious.

Reports of the accident came through just before noon and two fire engines and three ambulances were immediately sent to the scene. On of the cars had caught fire, but fire crews were able to put it out.

Ice on the roads in the area and visibility problems caused by a low-hanging sun are believed to be behind the pile-up.

To make matters worse, an eleventh vehicle subsequently struck a police car which had been stationed to cut off the area of the incident.

The cars involved have sustained considerable damage.
