A great crowd has assembled outside the police headquarters in Reykjavik, at Hlemmur square to protest police action in releasing two rape suspects following an investigation which we reported earlier today.

The protest which started at five is getting increasingly louder with speakers shouting and screaming at police.

Sigríður Björk Guðjónsdóttir, head of the Reykjavik Metropolitan Police and police lawyer Alda Hrönn Jóhannsdóttir appeared at the steps of the police headquarters. They spoke to protesters and invited them to come inside after the protest to discuss the matter.

Guðjónsdóttir expressed that it was important to see such unanimous support against sexual crimes and said that police would do their best in improving matters. She was met with screams and had to leave.

Various members of the public stepped up describing their experiences of making rape charges and sexual violence.

The noise has escalated now at 18.50 pm and there is a noticeable presence of police guarding the premises and sirens have gone off.

Men, women and children have gathered together at Hlemmur.
