Iceland’s women made a splendid start to their Euro 2017 qualifying campaign with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Belarus yesterday evening.

Iceland dominated the match from start to finish, with 27 attempts on goal. It was only a matter of time until one reached the back of the net, when Hólmfríður Magnúsdóttir scored in the 30th minute of play.

A second goal – by Dagný Brynjarsdóttir – came in the second half, and an opportunity to further improve the score line some came along when Iceland was awarded a penalty. Margrét Lára Viðarsdóttir was, however, unable to convert the penalty into a 3-0 lead.

Iceland next face FYR Macedonia away on 22 October, then Slovenia away on 26 October.
