Among the illegal things on offer in closed groups for Icelanders on Facebook are drugs, alcohol and unofficial cabs. A large group of more than four thousand members sells alcohol to people below the legal drinking limit.

A Facebook group called Skutlarar is also popular with young people who can't afford cabs and get lifts in this way for a smaller charge.

According to poice investigator Þórir Ingvarsson this activity is illegal and could be dangerous as people are taking risks in being driven by people without a cab licence. Lifts with strangers should never be accepted.

A few Facebook groups specialise in the buying and selling of drugs and another group specialises in swapping items such as designer clothes, computers, watches and even cars for drugs.

The Reykjavik metropolitan police believe illegal dealings on social media to be widespread and are continuing their operations. Several Facebook pages, for instance, offering drugs for sale have been shut down.
