"Thanks for your care and consideration, best regards from little Aron," are words written in icing on a cake delivered to deputy chief of police Ásgeir Þór Ásgeirsson yesterday. On the cake was also a photograph of Ásgeirsson holding little Aron's hand, taken by Mbl photographer Eva Björk Ægisdóttir from the day of the armed siege in Kópavogur last Tuesday when police surrounded the street of Hlíðahjalli after gunshots were heard from an apartment building.

The Reykjavik Metropolitan Police published a photo of the cake on their Facebook page. "We just wanted to give them a cake to show our gratitude. They showed immense support for my little nephew and I while the whole operation was taking place," says Berglind Ósk Sigurðardóttir who was babysitting her nephew on the third floor of the building. She was also one of the people who reported the gunshot to police.

"I heard a loud bang at ten to three and we knew that gunshots had been reported the day before," she explains. "I called my mum and she told me to call the police and then the whole thing started. "

When the special armed police unit arrived, they told Sigurðardóttir to stay inside the apartment with the little boy. She tells mbl.is that they kept checking on them to see if they were ok and to tell them they were safe. Little Aron was scared of the policemen at first but then one of them introduced himself to Aron as "Löggimann", a childlike term for a "cop" and that everything was ok, which calmed him down. The child's father had to wait until the siege was over to come back to the family's home.

"I think the policeforce really deserve a lot of praise for how they handled the situation," Sigurðardóttir adds. "It's nice to know that even in such a situation one feels safe."

The bang heard at Hlíðahjalli is still under investigation as police found noone inside the apartment building where the noise was heard.

Ásgeirsson says he got goosebumps when he was called to the policedesk and found Sigurðardóttir and the little boy standing there with the cake. "The photograph of Aron and I shows how calm we actually were, as strange as that may seem."
