Former Icelandic PM dies
Former Prime Minister of Iceland, Halldór Ásgrímsson, has died, aged 67.
Ásgrímsson, former leader of the Progressive Party (‘Framsóknarflokkurinn’) and Prime Minister of Iceland from September 2004 to July 2006, suffered a severe heart attack on Friday and died yesterday evening in hospital.
Ásgrímsson served as a Member of the Icelandic Parliament (‘Alþingi’) for a total of 31 years and was Minister for Fisheries from 1983 to 1991.
He also served as Minister for Foreign Affairs, Minister for Agriculture and Environment, and Minister for Health and Social Security. He was President of the Nordic Council of Ministers from 2007 to 2013.
Ásgrímsson leaves behind his wife, three daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
