Iceland Eurovision entry in jeopardy?
The ongoing strike of lawyers in Iceland could jeopardise the country’s participation in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest.
Strike having wide impact
Lawyer members of the Icelandic Association of Academics (BHM) have been on strike since last Tuesday following the continued collapse of talks with State representatives to resolve wage disputes. There is as yet no end in sight to the industrial action currently affecting legal and notarial services in many areas.
Will Iceland be able to provide a jury vote?
For many years, it has been the task of notaries working for the Reykjavik District Commissioner to oversee and confirm the deliberations and results of the Icelandic professional jury voting on Eurovision entries. These notaries are currently involved in the ongoing strike action.
An announcement issued by BHM this morning detailing the various effects of the lawyers’ strike on Icelandic society warns that “protracted strike action could jeopardise Iceland’s Eurovision participation”.
