Car plunges into river: Extensive search for car and driver
Rescue and police teams took part in an extensive search for a car that was reported to have fallen into the powerful river currents of Ölfusá in Selfoss, south Iceland at 22:40 last night. Boats, divers and a helicopter searched in the river and on the river banks.
The search went on until the late hours of the night and continued at 7 a.m. this morning. Search conditions are difficult as the river is very deep in this particular area with powerful currents which may have taken the car far downstream. The driver is believed to have been alone in the car and his identity is known. Relatives have been notified.
