A 3.1 magnitude earthquake hit Grímsvötn at about half past four in the morning. This is the biggest earthquake since August 2nd last year when one of 3.8 magnitude was detected there.

The area has been increasingly active after two glacial runs that occurred in Grímsvötn in the past year. The first one occurred on December 4th last year and the last one on October 16th last year.

According to Bjarki Kaldalóns Friis, a natural hazards specialist at the Icelandic Met Office, there is no volcanic turbulence in the area, as well as no aftershocks. There was only one earthquake.

The last eruption in Grímsvötn occurred in 2011.
