A man fell 20-30 meters down a gorge in Norðurdalur by the highway going up Steingrímsfjarðarheiði í Strandir yesterday.

Úlfar Örn Hjartarson the district manager of the Rescue Team Dagenning in Strandir, confirms this to mbl.is. The man has substantial injuries, he says.

"Our men came to the scene and a person who had been passing by was already trying to tend to him. Our people with paramedics and a doctor took care of the man until the helicopter of the Coast Guard arrived."

The call to the Rescue Team was made at 1:50 PM but the helicopter arrived at Landspítali hospital just before 5 PM.

Hjartarson says that the rescue operation went well overall and there were 20 people at the scene at one point.
