Travel experts from the booking service Culture Trip (theculturetrip.com) list the Húsafell Giljaböð (Húsafell Canyon Baths) in Borgarfjörður, West Iceland, as one of the World’s Greatest Travel Experiences for 2022, Morgunblaðið reports. The baths, which opened in 2019, are among 14 “unforgettable experiences from around the world that travellers shouldn’t miss this year,” Culture Trip states.

“Follow a short path through the surreal Icelandic landscape to enjoy a soak in the remote Húsafell Canyon Baths, fed from the Giljaböð Hot Springs,” their description reads. “Relax in the soothing waters while taking in the spectacular views of the surrounding canyon and glaciers.”

“This is an important recognition…and one of the best you can get in recreational tourism,” states Unnar Bergþórsson, managing director of Hótel Húsafell. The Canyon Baths are part of the services offered at Húsafell. “It catches the attention of tourists, unfamiliar with the Canyon Baths, who come to the country or who are planning trips here. Our operation is fairly new, since we opened just before the onset of COVID-19 and haven’t promoted the baths much so far.”

A guide accompanies guests to the baths, which are located in a canyon near Hótel Húsafell. Self-sustainability was a guiding light in the buildup of the site.

Unnar emphasizes the importance of being innovative when it comes to recreation for tourists. He states attendance has been beyond expectations for the first two years and notes that travelers regard a visit there as an adventure. He notes that the contribution of the two local guides they have hired played an important part in obtaining the recognition from Culture Travel.
