The idea of installing ziplines by Glerárgil ravine in Akureyri, North Iceland, has been introduced to the Akureyri planning committee, Morgunblaðið reports. It was presented by Jón Heiðar Rúnarsson and Aníta Hafdís Björnsdóttir and was well received.

The first of five ziplines would be installed by a pedestrian bridge over Glerá river by Þingvallastræti road and the fifth one about 500 meters downhill from there, toward the University of Akureyri. All five ziplines would cross the river.

“We’re at square one,” Jón Heiðar states. “We’re at a stage of design and brainstorming for this project and will continue our work.” He notes the idea is to install ziplines comparable to the ones used by the company Zipline Iceland in Vík í Mýrdal, South Iceland.

“We’re working closely with our friends in Vík and planning to install ziplines in Glerárgil ravine that are similar to the ones there.”

Guides will assist guests on both ends of the zipline. Once across the river, guests will hike a short distance from one zipline to the next.

A final assessment of the zipline project would be done by a team of foreign specialists.

Jón Heiðar states that the project would be a great addition to the recreational options already available in Akureyri — a paradise for outdoor recreation.
