The results are in for Big 7 Travel‘s picks for the 50 best beaches of 2021, with Iceland‘s Reynisfjara ranking 6th, Mbl.is reports.

Travel website Big 7 Travel publishes an annual list of the 50 best beaches in the world, highlighting must-see beaches for those who enjoy vacationing near the sea. A wide variety of beaches can be found in this year‘s list, ranging from the very accessible and lively South Beach in Miami (27th place), to the remote, cold and pristine beaches of the Monach Isles in Scotland (40th place), or the even remoter Vaeroy Beach in the Lofoten archipelago in northern Norway (1st place).

Reynisfjara is one of the few beaches on the list where it would be hopeless to try to relax under a parasol with a refreshing cocktail in hand. There the weather is uninviting for most of the year, the sand is black and the sea is anything rough.  No wonder the area can be spotted in scenes shot “North of the Wall” in the Game of Thrones TV-series.

While Reynisfjara is less than a three hour drive from Reykjavik, and a popular stop on the way to the Jökulsá glacier lagoon, tourists should be very careful when visiting the area as unpredictable „sneaker waves“ have been known to knock people down and sweep them out to sea, resulting in fatal accidents in recent years. ai@mbl.is
