The Most Beautiful Place in Iceland?

What is Iceland’s most beautiful place? This question, of course, has numerous answers, depending on whom you ask, but many people would no doubt count Þórsmörk, South Iceland, among the candidates.

Þórsmörk is located between the glaciers Tindfjallajökull and Eyjafjallajökull, and this is where the rivers Krossá, Þröngá and Markarfljót run.

Getting there requires a well-equipped 4x4 and an experienced driver, because unbridged rivers must be crossed.

Here, some of Iceland’s most popular hiking trails lead, including the 53-km-long (33 mi) Laugavegur trail, going from Landmannalaugar to Þórsmörk, and the 22-km-long (14 mi) Fimmvörðuháls trail, between Skógar and Þórsmörk.

Two weeks ago, when Morgunblaðið photographer Hallur Már Hallsson visited Þórsmörk, this natural beauty was looking its best, bathed in sunshine.
