Blue Lagoon Retreat among World’s Best

The Retreat at Blue Lagoon Iceland has been selected by the US travel magazine AFAR as one of the world’s 27 best new hotels. Every month, AFAR receives hundreds of emails announcing hotel openings, and this year, they have issued their first-ever Stay List, a compendium of the world’s best new hotels, vetted by their staffers and contributors.
The hotel is located on the Reykjanes peninsula in Southwest Iceland, a short drive from Keflavík International Airport.
AFAR praises the hotel for offering a way to experience the mineral-rich geothermal spa “without the selfie stick-wielding throngs.” It is located next door to the main lagoon, providing exclusive access to newly created pools for hotel and spa guests.
The review praises the design of the hotel rooms, which include floor-to-ceiling windows and private balconies, maximizing the enjoyment of the colors of the landscape.
“It’s easy to spend an entire day floating in the geothermal pools, but when you’re ready to go farther afield, guides can take you on a hike up the dormant volcano behind the hotel,” the review concludes.
As recently as in February, the Retreat at Blue Lagoon was on the 2019 list of Travel + Leisure for their editors’ picks of the best new hotels in the world.
