"The glaciers are first and foremost a stunning formation of nature which will be sorely missed in Iceland," said Sigurðsson speaking to Morgunblaðið. If global warming continues unabated, they could completely disappear in the next 150 to 200 years.

"Iceland's glaciers are a part of all Iceland's history, at least for the last one thousand years. That history is disappearing before or eyes," said Sigurðsson.

Axelsson recently published a book containing photographs of Icelandic glaciers.

Sigurðsson believes that it's inevitable that the glaciers will disappear. "I don't think it's preventable now."
