Walking paths at Kerið criticised
Photographer Auðunn Níelsson is critical of the walking paths at Kerið, a famous crater in South Iceland. The paths were covered in ice and iron bindings were sticking out of the ground when he visited. "I don't mind that I have to pay a fee to go there, especially if that money goes towards upkeep of the walking paths, but this simply won't do," he said speaking to mbl.is. Óskar Magnússon, manager of Kerfélagið, the company running access to the crater, says that the company responded immediately to the criticism.
"At this time of year frost is thawing in the ground which means that steps and other things can become dislodged. Paths are very delicate at this time," he explained to mbl.is.
„Við bætist að það er erfitt að lagfæra svona þar sem ennþá er frost í jörðu og við notum engar vélar á svæðinu einmitt til þess að varðveita það. Við förum með fleiri hundruð hjólbörur fullar af möl um svæðið. Þetta er alls ekki í neinum ólestri, þetta er mjög tímabundið ástand.“
