The new Reykjavik EDITION hotel has started to rise next to Harpa Concert Hall and Conference Centre.

The basement is now being constructed and it is unlikely that the five-star hotel will open later this year as it was supposed to.

According to the Marriott website, “EDITION combines the personal, individualized and unique hotel experience of a world-class boutique hotel with the reach and scale of a global hospitality company to deliver an experience that is polished and personable, charismatic and comfortable, and sophisticated while remaining accessible.”

Marriott EDITION has secured a fifty-year contract to run the new hotel and is investing a total of $130 million (approx. ISK 17 billion) in the project.

The new luxury boutique hotel will offer 250 rooms, event and conference rooms, restaurants and spa facilities.

Marriott EDITION already runs four hotels, in Istanbul, London, Miami and New York, and in the coming years will be opening new hotels in places such as Abu Dhabi, Bali, Hollywood and Shanghai – and subsequently, Reykjavik, probably in 2019.

The man behind the EDITION brand is Ian Schrager. “Each hotel with its rare individuality, authenticity, originality and unique ethos reflects the best of the cultural and social milieu of its location and of the time,” read the website. “Although all of the hotels look completely different from each other, the Brand’s unifying aesthetic is in its approach and attitude to the modern lifestyle rather than its appearance.”
