There will soon be a parking fee at Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon and at Skaftafell nature reserve. Both are a part of Vatnajökull National Park.

The money will be used to build up facilities in the area, such as better parking spaces and toilet facilities. The aim is to finish it in the next 3-4 years according to Þórður H. Ólafsson, manager of Vatnajökull National Park.

It is not yet clear when exactly the National Park will start charging the fee, as Icelandic laws need to be changed for that to be allowed. Björt Ólafsdóttir Minister for Environment and Natural Resources has already put forward the bill to allow the fee at Alþingi, the Icelandic parliament.

It’s has not been decided how much it will cost to park by Jökulsárlón and Skaftafell. Ólafsson believes the price will be the same in these two places.

There is a parking fee at Þingvellir National Park, Iceland’s most visited national park not far from Reykjavik. The parking fee there is 500 ISK (4€) for a car and 3000 ISK (26€) for a bus.
