Coldest February in Reykjavik since 2002

Last month was the coldest February in almost 15 years in the Icelandic capital of Reykjavik, according to data from the Icelandic Met Office (link in Icelandic).

The average temperature in Reykjavik last month was -0.5°C (31°F), almost 2°C colder than the average over the last ten years. 27 of the 29 days of the month were white with snow in the capital, while locals enjoyed 85.6 hours of sunshine – 34 more than on average in the period 1961-90.

The northern town of Akureyri saw its coldest February since 2009 (-3.3°C – 26°C), while the famous Mývtan area of North Iceland registered the coldest temperature of the month – -22.5°C (-9°F) on the 26th.

The warmest February temperature was in the eastern port town of Seyðisfjörður, where locals enjoyed a positively spring-like 10°C (50°F) on the 16th of the month.

February snow depth records fell in many parts of the country, thanks to heavy snowfall and calm winds.
