Iceland’s famous Blue Lagoon geothermal spa will be closed for two weeks next month for renovation and extension work.

The main resort will be closed 5-21 January, with a limited number of guests able to opt for a ‘Luxury Experience’ at the Lagoon hotel’s private lagoon (€100, pre-booking essential) during that time.

The works to be carried out are part of the project to build a new five-star hotel – opening 2017 – and are estimated to cost ISK 400 million (approx. €2.8 million).

The larger, improved facilities will open on 22 January and are said to include a larger lagoon, a new ‘Skin Care’ bar, a new refreshment area and improved guest facilities.

This is the first time the Blue Lagoon is to close since 1999.
