After a week of bitterly cold conditions, temperatures in many parts of Iceland have started a slow climb back up above freezing.

A southerly wind is bringing in warmer air, with temperatures already positive in low-lying parts of western Iceland.

In the capital Reykjavik, for instance, the maximum temperature last Saturday was -4°C (25°F), whereas this Saturday the city is forecast to see 5°C (41°C).

The warmer air is set to bring a good deal of precipitation – falling as rain, sleet or snow – across the country throughout this week. Despite higher temperatures, icy conditions on many Icelandic roads are likely and drivers are advised to take special care.
