Temperatures across Iceland are set to plummet this week, with north and north-easterly winds potentially bringing -20°C (-4°F) in places.

The cold will begin to set in tomorrow, with the harshest conditions in inland areas of North Iceland.

“Temperature are falling fast under the influence of a north-easterly wind, with snowstorms in the north and brighter conditions in the south,” says the Icelandic Met Office.

“Winds will calm tonight and temperatures will fall further, with considerable frost in all parts of the country. -20°C in the coldest areas is not unlikely.”

Milder weather is gradually expected to arrive over the weekend, with temperatures climbing back into positive figures by Monday.
