Humpback whale rescue successful
International whale specialists were able to cut a fishing net from an entangled humpback whale this morning. A rescue mission for the injured whale set off yesterday from Reykjavik harbour.
"This has gone really well and we're on our way back after a successful operation," said María Björk Guðmundsdóttir, project manager at the Icelandic Association of Whale Watching. She adds that almost all the fishing net was removed and that the animal should be able to recover well from its injuries. The whale's fin had been badly cut by the net.
"If he stays in Faxaflói bay, the whale watching companies can keep track of him. His behaviour after being released from the net looked promising. We think the outlook is good."
