Boats are now hunting for a injured humpback whale in the straits of Faxaflói bay. The hunt is not intended to kill, but to come to the rescue of the animal which is badly entangled in fishing nets.

The rescue team includes members of several whale watching tour operators in Reykjavik, a vet, a vessel from the Icelandic coast guard and whale specialists from the Internatonal Whaling Committee.

The whale will not survive for long if he remains caught in the netting, which is entangled in its mouth and fins.

Update at 12.50 : The whale has been located and the boats are trying to approach it.
