The French tourists responsible for the off-road driving damage caused near the Vatnsfell hydroelectric power station in Iceland’s southern highlands appear to have escaped police detection.

It is now considered likely that they have left the country, according to police sources. Police were unable to apprehend them and impose a fine for their actions.

According to police, attempts were made to contact the tourists by telephone, but to no avail. The pair had had their hire car brought to a hotel and returned it to the same spot, meaning that the police’s only choice was to lie in wait for them at the hotel.

If they had returned their car to a car-rental agency, it would have been possible for police to ask for a tip-off when the car was returned.
