A passing driver has described the mess left by a group of partying youngsters at a campsite near Seljalandsfoss in southern Iceland as “disgusting”.

“I think ‘messy’ is putting it mildly,” says Haukur Jarl Kristjánsson. “I have never, or rarely, seen such a disgusting scene in the open in Iceland in my life. It was really terrible.”

Kristjánsson was driving past the famous Seljalandsfoss waterfall yesterday morning when he saw the mess left behind by the night’s revellers. “The group had clearly just driven off and not bothered to clear up after themselves,” says Kristjánsson.

The caretaker of the campsite was more sanguine about the incident. According to him, it was just a typical “youngster party”. The site was cleaned up straight away yesterday and the amount of rubbish was no more than usual.

This is little consolation to Kristjánsson. “We were on our way from Þórsmörk, we saw the mess and stopped,” he explains. “We shed a few tears and we continued on to Reykjavik. There was nobody around that we could talk to.”
