Winter snow stretches into June

The sun may have made an appearance in Reykjavik but parts of Eastern Iceland are still very much in the grip of winter.

Sigga Lund, a farmer and radio personality living in Jökuldal, Eastern Iceland, has spoken to Anna Marsibil Clausen at mbl.is about the seemingly never-ending snow.

“It has snowed lots recently,” she says. “I’m getting tired of it. That’s enough now.” The snow first came on October 14 last year and has been around practically ever since.

Lund moved to her farm at Vaðbrekka – about an hour from Egilsstaðir – last year. “We can’t even take our sheep up to graze in the mountains, as there is no greenery for them. This kind of weather really throws a spanner in the works as regards being a farmer.”

City-kids may chuckle but Lund is clear that this is no joke.

“Many jobs that should have finished by now are still waiting,” she explains. “The hay we gathered last year is running out. This winter has been tough for everybody in Iceland and I fully understand everybody’s desire for some decent weather.”

Lund posted this video of the current scene at Vaðbrekka on her Facebook page yesterday.
