Tourist numbers continue to soar

Some 91,000 foreign tourists departed from Keflavík International Airport in May this year, 36,4% more than in May 2014. Rises in tourist numbers have exceeded 20% every month so far this year.

According to data collected by the Icelandic Tourist Board on departing international passengers, tourists from China, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States have increased by 58% this month as compared to May 2014.

Just under three-quarters of foreign travellers in Iceland in May were of ten nationalities: American (22.3% of total), British (11.8%), German (7.4%), Norwegian (6.5%), Swedish (5.7%), French (5.1%), Canadian (4.9%), Danish (4.4%), Dutch (2.8%) and Polish (2.7%).

Tourist numbers according to the counting operations conducted at KEF have increased each month this year as follows: January (+34.5%), February (+34.4%), March (+26.8%), April (+20.9%) and May (36.4%).

Passengers departing from KEF in May on an Icelandic passport totalled 41,000, some 4,500 more than in May 2014.
