Bárðarbunga not expected to re-erupt

“There is every chance that this chain of events as come to an end, subsidence has halted and pressure has fallen greatly throughout the whole system. We therefore do not expect another eruption in the near future.”

This is the assessment of geophysicist Magnús Tumi Guðmundsson regarding the situation in Bárðarbunga. Surveillance flights over the area have confirmed what previous measurements had suggested, i.e. that subsidence has halted.

Some craters formed by geothermal heat are still subsiding, but more slowly than before, and Guðmundsson indicates that that these will continue to be monitored closely.
