How tourists in Iceland spend
Tourists visiting Iceland spend on average ISK 22,000 (approx. €148) on accommodation, ISK 13,000 (€88) on eating out and ISK 4,000 (€27) on other food, according to the annual tourism report published by the Economics Department of Landsbanki.
The average tourist also spends ISK 8,000 (€54) on car hire, just over ISK 3,000 (€20) on both cultural events and clothes, and just under ISK 2,000 (€13) on gifts.
The report breaks down foreign credit-card use in Iceland by category and nationality. This breakdown shows that spending on tourism services, car hire, eating out, museums and concerts has outstripped increases in tourist numbers. Spending on domestic passenger transport (land, sea and air) and shopping (other than groceries) has, however, not kept up with extra visitor numbers.
Visitors from China, Poland, Japan and the United Kingdom have been identified as those who spend the least on average when on holiday in Iceland.
