The ‘nature pass’ to be introduced for those wishing to visit certain popular tourist destinations in Iceland will not achieve its stated objective, according to the Þingvellir National Park. The pass will cost ISK 1,500 (approx. €10) and will be valid for three years. It is planned to be introduced on 1 September 2015.
Too complicated and contentious
In its official comments on the parliamentary bill concerning the nature pass, the Þingvellir National Park states that implementation of the system is so complicated and contentious that the pass cannot achieve its stated objective of “helping to protect Iceland’s natural surroundings by developing, maintaining and protecting tourist attractions and promoting issues of tourist safety.”
The Þingvellir National Park favours other methods to secure the necessary funds, e.g. charging an entrance fee to national parks and protected areas.
