Ice dam formed in Jökulsá river

A build up of ice has disrupted the flow of river Jökulsá á Fjöllum in the highlands. The ice spans 2,5 kilometres below the Grímsstaðir bridge and 3 kilometres above it according to the Icelandic met office. It's the largest build up of ice in the river since December 2010.

Ice build up is fairly common on this spot in the river and is formed during periods of cold and snowdrift. If the ice does not recede in the next few days the river could violently break its way through the ice which could be dangerous.
