The place that brought you the best pizzas and cocktails in town, hipper-than-thou restaurant Hverfisgata 12, now offers a stunning brunch menu on weekends.
Hverfisgata 12, located, aptly, at Hverfisgata right in the city centre, is also known as the nameless pizza place on Hverfisgata and opened just over a year ago. The owners are the same as successful Kex Hostel and award-winning Dill restaurant, recently voted Iceland's finest restaurant on the White Guide for 2016.
Brunch at Hverfisgata 12 makes for a cosy affair, as the restaurant is situated over the space of three different floors in a charming town house, where each room serves as part of the venue. The laid-back atmosphere feels a bit like you're popping over for brunch at a friend's house, albeit a very eccentric friend who loves obscure drawings of satyrian figures and hanging reindeer heads on the walls.
I had until now considered the restaurant a fairly grown-up sort of place, with their ambitious take on pizza, eclectic style and their famously fancy cocktails. This time round I was accompanied by two grown-ups and two younger guests, aged 4 and 14. Needless to say the magical atmosphere of the venue enchanted everyone. The smallest ordered sourmilk with granola, a most successful offering, which she described as "fluffy." The teenager went for the grown-up choice of smoked salmon and freshly baked flatbread, a meal she found "absolutely delicious."
The grown-ups, feeling adventurous, tried the brunch taster menu which as you might guess, offers a taste of a few of the brunch dishes on offer. When our meal arrived we were in awe of the presentation. A huge plate; complete with two skillets, one including a beautiful fried egg, the other, a fragrant tomato-basil concoction with crispy bacon; sourmilk, smoked salmon, home-made bread and flatbread and scrambled eggs.
All of this was utterly delicious, and fun to eat, and a combination that made for the perfect complete breakfast, accompanied by the fresh juice concoctions of the house and a round of heart-warming Lattes. All of this deliciousness didn't come with the greasy brunch afterfeel either, it all felt and tasted really healthy.
Also on the menu I noted salad options, side of pork, Icelandic style pancakes and croissants with jam.
Hverfisgata 12 comes like a fresh breeze into the aspiring world of Reykjavik's brunches with a rustic, laid back style perfect either for your hangover yupster brunch get together with friends or a small family gathering for all ages.
