The National and Olympic Sports Association of Iceland will start the campaign Walk to School tomorrow morning at 8:45 AM in Melaskóli in the western part of Reykjavík. This is the 16th time Iceland has been a part of this international campaign Walk to School, but the project started in the UK in 2000.

In an announcement from the association it is reported that there will be an impressive itininary which will end with students and guests officially starting the project by walking.

The importance of an active lifestyle

Furthermore it is stated that the main goal of the campaign is to encourage students and parents in Iceland to walk, bike or use other sustainable means of transport to and from school, as well as encourage people to incorporate more physical activity into their routines and teach children about the benefits of an active lifestyle. Other goals are to promote a healthy lifestyle, make children more adept at walking safely to school and minimize car traffic around schools. At the same time as the goal is to make people more aware of the importance of sustaainable transport and the benefits for the environment it is also meant to showcase how "walking friendly" the neighbourhood is and whether there is a need for improvement.

Those behind the campaign here in Iceland are the National and Olympic Sports Association of Iceland, the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture, the Directorate of Health, the Law Enforcement Agency, the ICE-SAR Association, Icelandic Transport Office and the National Association Home and School.
