Cheer up the Elderly with Song: Video

Vala Hafstað

Fifteen singers, some of them well known in Iceland, gathered on Wednesday in the back yard of Hrafnista-Ísafold – a home for the elderly in Garðabær, just south of Reykjavík, mbl.is reports.

The nursing home, just like all other nursing homes in Iceland, remains closed to visitors in an effort to contain the spread of COVID-19.

Therefore, residents flocked to their balconies to enjoy the cheerful singing outdoors. The singers sang several popular Icelandic songs, while residents, wrapped in wool blankets, sipped hot chocolate and enjoyed the music.

The person whose idea it was to entertain the residents is Ingunn Björk Vilhjálmsdóttir. Her 89-year-old father is a resident of the nursing home.

In the video above, you can listen to the final song. The singers are standing far apart, keeping a two-meter distance from one another, as required during the ban on public gatherings.
