According to Smartland, the style section of mbl.is the hands down winner of most popular dish of 2015 in Iceland is something called "eðlan" or The Lizard in English.

Recipes of the lizard went rampant on Facebook pages such as Beauty Tips and Smartland's version on mbl.is was the most widely read recipe of the year.

So what on earth is "The Lizard"? It's definitely not a healthy offering and is particularly popular with young people and is a kind of Mexican dip that you put in the oven. It generally includes cream cheese, salsa, cheesa sauce and grated cheese.

Here's  Smartlands version, particularly recommended for Saturday nights in with a good movie.

4-5 chicken breasts
paprika
salt and pepper to taste
1 finely chopped red pepper
1 finely chopped onion
2finely chopped tomatoes
1 bag tortilla chips
250 grammes cream cheese
1 Mexókóstur cheese (a processed Icelandic cheese with Mexican spices)
2 dl cream
150 grammes grated cheese

Method: Cook the chicken breasts in a pan with paprika, salt and pepper. Dice the meat after cooking. Place the mexico cheese, cream cheese and cream in a a saucepan until melted.  Place a quarter of the nachos in an oven dish, place half of the chicken pieces over the nachos and then pour the cheese sauce over it. Next, put half of the vegetables, half of the cheese sauce and half of the grated cheese. Repeat: nachos, chicken, cheese sauce, vegetables, cheese sauce and grated cheese.

Place in the oven for around 20 minutes. Serve with guacamole, sour cream, rice or a side salad.
