Excited cinema-goers watching last night’s première in Iceland of the new Star Wars film left the show in annoyance as technical problems at one cinema dogged the final minutes of the film.

After a ten-year wait, Star Wars fans sat down in the packed-out theatre at Reykjavik’s Egilshöll cinema to enjoy the latest chapter in the epic science-fiction film series.

Some ten minutes before the end of the long-awaited film, the image froze for 10-15 seconds. The audience remained calm – but not for long.

The film continued, but then proceeded to freeze again no less than seven times for several seconds each before the film ended – sometimes at moments of high drama.

“Is this being streamed online?!” called out one irate audience member. “I’ve been waiting for this for ten years!” exclaimed another. Viewers were clearly not happy.

No cinema staff were on hand after the showing to offer an explanation or an apology, and it remains unclear whether the glitches originated in the film file itself or in the cinema’s projection equipment.
